I only had a few days to finish this project (as usual). Following storyboards from our Art Director, I setup a basic animation in Maya with a sphere and animated the ribbons. Then I setup about 7 render layers and some very basic shaders. There was an alpha, a fresnel/facing ratio ramp and earth texture on the sphere. For the ribbons there was just an alpha and fresnel ramp. There were a few other layers in there for compositing it all together in After Effects.
I went back and forth between Maya and After Effects until I had the layers I needed. I made the background and ground plane in After Effects and made the ground lines reflections in After Effects. I finished it off with some Trapcode Shine.
